One of the most common questions we get at EnderGrid is, "How much RAM do I need for my Minecraft server?" Too little RAM leads to constant OutOfMemory crashes, while paying for too much is just a waste of your money.
Many poorly-optimized server hosts will try to upsell you on 32GB RAM plans. But the truth is, Minecraft relies far more heavily on CPU speed than memory. Here is a breakdown of what you actually need.
The Baseline: 2GB (Vanilla, 1-3 Players)
If you are playing vanilla Minecraft (no plugins, no mods) with just a couple of friends on a current version (1.18+), 2GB of RAM is the absolute structural minimum. Modern Minecraft worlds are tall and deep, requiring a minimum amount of RAM just to keep the chunks loaded. We recommend saving this tier only for very casual, small sessions.
The Sweet Spot: 4GB - 6GB (Paper, Plugins, 10-20 Players)
This is where 90% of Minecraft servers sit. If you run a tuned PaperMC server, install essential plugins (Permissions, CoreProtect, Economy), and have a dedicated player base, 4 to 6 GB of RAM is perfect.
Why not more? Because Java's Garbage Collector—the background process that cleans up unused memory—actually becomes less efficient and can cause lag spikes if it has to scan massive amounts of unused RAM (like 16GB+ on a lightly used server).
Heavy Duty: 8GB+ (Modpacks and Massive Servers)
You only need 8GB or more if you fall into one of two categories:
- Heavy Modpacks: Massive tech or magic modpacks (like All The Mods 9 or Enigmatica) load thousands of custom items, blocks, and dimensions. They require substantial RAM.
- Massive Player Limits: If you regularly have 50+ players online simultaneously, each generating new chunks and entities, you need more memory to handle the load.
The RAM vs CPU Myth
A host offering "Unlimited RAM" on a 10-year-old heavily shared processor will always perform worse than a 4GB plan running on a modern, dedicated high-clock CPU.
For a standard SMP, 4GB to 6GB is a rock-solid start that balances cost and performance perfectly.
